Why we’re doing this
For millions of people, the nearest doctor is hours away, or too expensive to reach. Yet most of these communities already have a mobile signal. We believe a phone can close that gap.
What we’re working on
We’re developing a mobile app that lets patients record a short video message about their health concern and send it to a doctor, who replies the same way. No live call, no appointment, no waiting room.
Our design principles:
No words, no barriers.
The app is built entirely around icons, so it can be used in any language and by anyone, whether or not they can read.
Made for weak connections.
Short, compressed messages that send when a signal is available.
Private and respectful.
A message stays between the patient and the doctor, so someone can ask about a health concern without anyone else in their community knowing.
Free or fee-based.
Care can be offered at no cost or for a fair price, depending on the community.
Doctors serving their own communities.
Doctors can offer virtual care to underserved areas of their home country, either volunteering or earning extra income.
Open to nonprofits.
Organizations already serving these communities can use it to bring doctors to the people they help.
Where we are now
The Zira CARE Initiative is in its early stages. We’re shaping the app design, talking with doctors and nonprofit partners, and planning our first communities. We’ll share more as the work moves forward.
Get involved
If you’re a doctor, part of a nonprofit, or someone who believes healthcare shouldn’t depend on where you live, we’d love to hear from you.
